Creativity requires competencies

"The role of a teacher in the 21st century is first and foremost to be a coach, to coach students to a higher performance standard"
Tony Wagner believes that we have evolved past the knowledge economy toward an innovation economy. The challenge for human beings is to find a solution to a wide range of problems, thus to raise and educate people who are creative problem solvers. He defines these main competencies as critical thinking, communication, collaboration, which need to be clearly defined and assessed. Inevitably, this will impact the role of teachers: rather than teaching facts, teachers should coach their students on how much they can do with their knowledge.
Tony Wagner is a prominent educator and author. He is currently serving as an Expert In Residence at Harvard University’s new Innovation Lab.
