School of Rock

"I wanted my children to grow up in a world where people make music. And what I want for my children I also want for my students."
When his school district cut 5th Grade Band for budgetary reasons, Jamie McGrath thought it was tragic. So, he built his own version of the program.
We have recently posted Jamie's TEDxCC talk with designer Andrew Davies called "The future will not be multiple choice" about the benefits of teaching design thinking in schools. Jamie McGrath is a teacher and gifted specialist at Gould Elementary School in Savannah, Georgia. He is the author of poetry, plays, fiction and, most recently, a handbook for new teachers titled "Before You Teach."
"And that's when I realized that the instructional value of this little enterprise (rock band) went way beyond the music. What more important skills can young people learn, and all of us learn..that kind of perseverance and cooperation...that tough real life cooperation.."
